Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay was an Indian Bengali novelist who lived from September 12, 1894 to November 1, 1950. He is well known for his short stories and novels. His best-known works are Pather Panchali and Aparajito. Aranyak, Chander Pahar, Adarsha Hindu Hotel, Ichamati, and Ashani Sanket are among the other novels.
Bibhutibhushan also published around 20 short stories, a few teen novels, travelogues, and diaries in addition to novels. Satyajit Ray‘s film, based on Bibhutibhushan’s novel Pather Panchali, is highly renowned. For his novel Ichamati, Bibhutibhushan got the Rabindra Award (posthumously) in 1951, West Bengal’s highest literary honor.
With the publishing of Upekshita in the Prabasi Patrika in 1921, Bibhutibhushan started his literary career. He began writing Pather Panchali in 1925 and finished in the year 1926, while working in Bhagalpur. This is Bibhutibhushan’s first and most well-known work. Upendranath Gangopadhyay, the literary editor of Bichitra, appreciated the writing and published it. Bibhutibhushan gained immense popularity in the novel. Satyajit Ray, a well-known film director, began his career by turning Pather Panchali into a movie. The name of this movie was Pather Panchali. The film won numerous awards and honors both domestically and internationally. Then he wrote the novel, Aparajito, which is the next part of Pather Panchali.
Ray also made another film based on the novel Aparajito which is the sequel of Pather Panchali. Both novels reflect his personal life which means novels are autobiographical. Pather Panchali has been translated into several Indian languages as well as Western languages including English and French. Meghamallar, Mauriful, and Jatrabadal are some of Bibhutibhushan’s most well-known narrative books. He wrote the Chander Pahar, a fantastic adventure narrative set in Africa. Famous Bengali filmmaker Kamleshwar Mukherjee adapted “Chander Pahar” into a Bengali film in 2013. In the Bengali film world, this film was very well-known. Many more movies have been made with his writing which is equally popular.
