Manik Bandyopadhyay (1908–1956) was an Indian literary figure of the twentieth century. It’s hard to believe that he lived 48 years and wrote for 28 years, all while facing epilepsy and financial hardships.

In 28 years of his literary career, he wrote 38 novels, 306 short stories (including 32 juvenile stories), one book of drama, one book of poems, and one book of essays on literature.

The first novel Diba Ratrir Kabya was written by Manik Bandyopadhyay at the age of 21. Some of his best-known works include the novel Janani (Mother), Diba Ratrir Kabbo, Padma Nadir Majhi (The Boatman of Padma ), Putul Nacher Itikatha, Itikathar Porer Katha, Shahartali, Chatushkone, and Chinha (Signs).

During his lifetime, Manik published 16 books of short story collections. Pragoitihashik, Sarishrip, Atashi Mami, Holud Pora, Aaj Kal Porshur Golpo, Bou, Chhotobokulpurer Jatri, Feriwala are some of his best-known works.

The author has been suffering from epilepsy since 1935, which later escalated into a critical condition. Towards the end of his life, he suffered severe financial hardship. He died on December 3, 1956, after a long illness.
